New web project “CDE Time Capsule” brings the 1994 years back to a modern browser

What is this project?
- CDE Time Capsule is a fully functional Debian Linux image running in the browser as a progressive web app (PWA).
- The Common Desktop Environment (CDE) and the “look” of the distribution are recreated to resemble how it appeared around 1994.
- It works on any device: desktop PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Why this matters
At that time Unix‑like operating systems had only one graphical interface – CDE, developed jointly by HP, IBM and Sun (introduced in 1993).
GNOME and KDE didn’t appear until the end of the decade. The project lets you “immerse” yourself in the atmosphere of those years without installing a full OS.

What it looks like
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Desktop | 76 color schemes, 198 original wallpapers |
| Boot screen | Simulates a boot process after which CDE appears |
| Panels | Bottom panel with icons, top panel shows “system information” + workspace switcher (4 desktops) |
| Applications | Netscape browser, terminal, Xemacs text editor, file manager, system process manager |
| Site simulation | Internal browser opens only sites styled like the 90s (not real URLs) |

How to use
1. Web version – simply open the link on the author’s site or repository; the app will automatically install as a PWA.
2. Local installation – clone the repository, run `npm install && npm start`.
3. On your own domain – you can deploy the project on any web server (Node.js/NGINX).

Other things to know
- Inside the environment real programs run: terminal, text editor, etc., although they are not connected to a real system.
- A set of settings allows changing the appearance and behavior of the interface.
- The code is fully open source, with detailed documentation and beginner instructions.

Bottom line: CDE Time Capsule is not just a visual “trip” back to the 90s; it’s a full-fledged, functioning Debian environment available right from the browser. A great way to revisit old habits or simply play with Unix history.
