This week, OpenAI fired three new executives
OpenAI is experiencing waves of personnel changes before its IPO
According to the latest data, the company preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) is undergoing “painful” transformations that include a mass exodus of executives. Last week, three more senior employees left OpenAI, including Vice President of Research Kevin Weil.
Key departures
| Who left | Position | Reason/commentary |
|---|---|---|
| Kevin Weil | VP of Research | After his departure the company announced decentralizing research to better integrate it with teams’ practical projects. |
| Bill Pibls | Head of Sora Service (AI video generation) | The service was shut down due to low return on investment; Pibls noted that implementing the project in other companies is unlikely. |
| Srinivas Narayanan | CTO of Enterprise Applications | Announced his exit via X. |
| Fiji Simpu | Product Director | Paused work due to health issues; her departure was part of a large company reorganization. |
| Kate Rauch | Marketing Director | Had to leave for similar reasons related to business process reform. |
| Brad Lightcap | COO | Transferred to a new role managing special projects. |
Context and plans
- Weil has been with OpenAI since 2024, previously headed the research division, aiming to create tools that accelerate research. Prior to that he worked on product development at Meta and Twitter.
- After Sora’s closure, the company abandoned further AI video generation, leading to the termination of its agreement with Disney.
- OpenAI representatives said decentralizing research will more closely link studies with practical tasks of teams working on different directions.
Thus, as part of IPO preparation, OpenAI is conducting a deep restructuring of leadership and processes to enhance the company’s efficiency and flexibility.
