Toyota has developed its own game engine, but it will not be used in video games
Toyota launches its own game engine—Fluorite
At the recent FOSDEM 2026 event, Toyota announced its new game engine Fluorite, created in collaboration with Very Good Ventures.
The engine is intended for the “digital instrument cluster” of cars and will enable a range of practical features:
FeatureWhat it does3‑D step‑by‑step operating instructionsShow users how to service or use the vehicleDisplay of surroundingsProvide a visual representation of the external environment (pedestrians, vehicles, objects)Natural controlsImprove interface interaction through more intuitive controllers
Key project participants
- Jamie Kerber – lead engineer from Very Good Ventures who spoke at FOSDEM.
- The collaboration involves Toyota’s North American division and the Automotive Grade Linux project.
Comparison with competitors
Epic Games actively promotes Unreal Engine as a solution for automotive interfaces. This forces automakers to hire game designers familiar with such platforms. However:
- Licensing fees—high costs of using the engine.
- Hardware requirements—modern car processors often lag behind computer standards, limiting graphics capabilities.
Fluorite features
The project authors claim it is “the first console‑level game engine” fully integrated into the Flutter SDK. Key characteristics:
- High performance on low‑end and embedded hardware.
- Graphics acceleration comparable to that of console games.
Despite the promises, the engine is in an early stage of development. During the presentation it was mentioned that developers are looking for engineer partners to bring resources and formulate a long‑term development plan for the project.
