Twitch Strengthens Fight Against Artificial Views

The streaming service Twitch announced new measures against “view inflation.” CEO Dan Clancy said that in the coming weeks a new type of restriction will be launched for channels that regularly use bots and other methods to artificially inflate view counts.

What Will Change
* Limiting concurrent viewers – channels subject to sanctions will receive a cap on the number of simultaneously connected viewers over a fixed period across all sections of the platform.
* Individual approach – the size of the restriction will be calculated based on “historical data” of the author’s normal traffic (i.e., without inflation).
* Extended duration for repeat violations – if a streamer violates the rules again, the restriction period is extended.

How It Works
Clancy emphasized that the exact algorithms for detecting unfair practices are not yet disclosed. “The battle against bots for view inflation is complex: as soon as we update real‑time detection systems, bot providers quickly change their methods,” he said.

Twitch’s History of Fighting Fraud
This isn’t the first step the platform has taken to clean up fake accounts. In 2021 Twitch removed over 7.5 million bot accounts. Nevertheless, users have expressed concerns that new restrictions could affect lesser‑known streamers and make them vulnerable to attacks from competitors using bots for their own benefit.

Open Questions
Users are wondering how Twitch will distinguish “planned” activity spikes from artificially created ones. The company has not provided details yet, but one thing is clear: fighting inflation is becoming a priority task for the platform.
