Valve Updated Steam: Fixed Video Memory Calculation Bug

Valve released a new update for the Steam client and in the release notes acknowledged that the previous version incorrectly calculated the amount of available video memory. It is still unknown how much this affected January’s statistics.

Why Knowing “Ideal” Statistics Matters
To understand what modern gamers are using, people usually turn to Steam‑Stats data. However, that data was also incomplete: in a beta version of Valve’s client an error was reported that caused the video memory information on some graphics cards to be incorrect.

How Data Is Collected Now
In the new version the client changed the hardware profiling scheme:

- When multiple GPUs are present, Steam selects the one with the most video memory and uses it for rendering and data transfer.

- This change can alter metrics, especially those related to GPU capacity.

January 2026 Statistics
Metric Value
Video Memory 29.57 % of systems have 8 GB (it is still unknown how the error affected this figure)
RAM 40.24 % of players use 16 GB RAM – sufficient for most games
OS Windows 11 +0.11 pp, now at 66.71 % of users
OS Windows 10 remains 27.79 %, even though Microsoft’s official support ended in October 2025

Conclusion
- Valve fixed the video memory calculation error and updated the data collection scheme.
- Current graphics statistics may be recalculated, especially for systems with multiple GPUs.
- Most players use 16 GB RAM, and the share of Windows 11 users continues to grow.
