Varda Space Industries moves closer to building space factories

American company Varda Space Industries announced a significant step toward constructing manufacturing facilities in space, confirmed by the successful landing of the test vehicle W‑6.

What’s new?
* First U.S. license – Varda received the single historic American license for launching unmanned satellites capable of returning to Earth’s atmosphere.

* Microgravity products – using these vehicles the company plans to deliver materials that can only be produced in microgravity conditions. The main focus is pharmaceuticals.

Why it matters?
Building and launching spacecraft is expensive.

* Braking system – adding equipment to reduce orbital velocity increases cost.

* Manned ships – even more costly, limiting cargo delivery from space.

Thus access to “return” remains a rare and expensive resource.

Technical details of W‑6
In March the company launched the W‑6 capsule capable of withstanding hypersonic atmospheric entry.

* Autonomous navigation – the system uses onboard images to recognize stars and satellites on low Earth orbit, allowing precise determination of the vehicle’s position.

* Thermal protection – the capsule is equipped with advanced protective plating and two additional plates for data recording. This data will be analyzed by NASA specialists to understand material behavior during hypersonic entry and improve technologies for delivering orbital products without overheating.

Flight results
The capsule landed successfully on May 18, Monday, at the Kunibba test range in South Australia.

* Varda did not disclose details about the vehicle’s condition but emphasized that the flight confirmed “the availability of private, inexpensive, and reliable returns.”

* This is already the fourth capsule in a year, according to Southern Launch range operator.

Thus W‑6 demonstrates the practical implementation of the space factory concept and paves the way for economically viable delivery of microgravity products to Earth.
