Web versions of WhatsApp will enable voice and video calls 11 years after the launch.
WhatsApp Web can now make calls: what has changed
*The web version of the messenger has existed since 2015, but it was only recently that voice and video calling capabilities were added.*
The technology appeared as part of a beta‑testing program.
How does it work now?
- Calls are available only in private chats; group calls are not yet supported.
- Users can share their device’s screen during a conversation.
What is expected in the near future?
1. Group calls – support for up to 32 participants is planned, allowing conversations with larger groups directly from the browser.
2. Links and scheduling – buttons will appear for creating call links and for pre‑scheduling meetings.
As in the mobile app, all calls are encrypted end‑to‑end by default.
Thus, the WhatsApp web client is gradually catching up to the functionality of the mobile app, offering users more flexible ways to communicate through a browser.
