Windows 11 now supports Xbox mode on both desktops and laptops as well as tablets
Microsoft launches “Xbox Mode” on Windows 11 devices
Microsoft announced the introduction of a new gaming mode—“Xbox Mode,” now available in the preview build of Windows 11 (build 29570.1000). Recently, it can be installed by Windows Insider program participants on the Canary channel.
What is this mode?
- A full‑screen interface without extraneous desktop elements, specifically optimized for games.
- Control is handled via a gamepad; you can also quickly enter the mode using the Game Bar or the Win + F11 shortcut.
How does it fit into Microsoft’s strategy?
Microsoft first announced plans to launch Xbox Mode at GDC 2026. In April of that year, the company announced the rollout of the new mode for all Windows 11 device form factors in select regions.
This month, Microsoft officially renamed the previous “Xbox full screen experience” to “Xbox Mode”—the name under which the gaming mode will continue to evolve.
When will it appear in the stable release?
At present, an exact release date for “Xbox Mode” in the final Windows 11 version has not been specified. Users who want to try out the new functionality can download the preview build 29570.1000 via the Windows Insider program.
