Windows 11 will stop supporting older printer drivers V3 and V4 with the subsequent update
Microsoft is ending support for legacy printer drivers in Windows 11
Starting in January 2026, the Windows 11 operating system will no longer support older printer drivers. This change will affect the 24H2 and 25H2 releases of the OS, which will be gradually updated, reports *Windows Central*.
What this means for users – Printers that rely solely on removable drivers will stop working correctly after new updates are installed.
- Devices using V3 or V4 drivers may fail to install or malfunction.
Why Microsoft made this move
1. Security – legacy drivers had long been a weak link in Windows protection and were often targeted by hackers.
2. Stability – they caused system crashes, reducing OS reliability.
3. Simplifying support – abandoning old models lets developers focus on modern printing technologies.
How to prepare – Most printers already use new printing standards and will remain compatible with Windows 11 without changes.
- For devices that still depend on legacy drivers (commonly found in small businesses, schools, and home offices), it is recommended:
1. Contact the printer manufacturer for an updated driver.
2. If necessary, switch to new equipment.
Important note – Microsoft announced this plan back in September 2023 so that users and OEMs could prepare. The transition to modern printing standards is now mandatory to keep printers working with Windows 11.
