xAI delayed the release of an updated version of Grok due to Baldur’s Gate 3 while Elon Musk is trying to train a chatbot to play League of Legends
New Grok Priorities: Video Game Play—Key to Release
Chatbots have different goals. The neural network *Grok*, created by xAI (owned by billionaire Elon Musk), places special emphasis on gaming tasks.
Business Insider, relying on its own sources, reports that in 2025 the company was forced to postpone the release of the next version of Grok. Reason: the bot could not provide accurate answers to detailed questions about the popular RPG Baldur’s Gate 3.
“Mask” became so disappointed with Grok’s knowledge level regarding this game that he redirected senior engineers from other projects to fix the problem.
In addition, Musk inquired about the possibility of training Grok to play League of Legends—a well‑known MOBA from Riot Games. For this purpose a special operational headquarters was created at xAI, responsible for critical tasks. One of the main goals became helping bots reach the highest rank in the game, “Challenger” (the contender).
These events took place against the backdrop of Musk’s public statements about his gaming skills in Path of Exile 2 and Diablo IV. It turned out that to improve characters he sometimes consulted external specialists.
In 2025 Michael Douse, head of the publishing department at Larian Studios—responsible for Baldur’s Gate 3—criticized Musk’s promises to “make games great again” with AI. This added further tension around the Grok project and its gaming objectives.
