Xiaomi plans annual updates of its own XRing processor

During a recent appearance at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Xiaomi President Lu Weibing announced the company’s new strategy: each year a new chip designed in-house – the XRing processor for smartphones – will be released.

> Key points

> • The first integrated product in 2024 – a smartphone that combines its own XRing chip, HyperOS operating system, and Xiao AI assistant.

> • Xiaomi intends to promote this configuration both in the domestic Chinese market and abroad.

Why it matters
- The only other SoCs made by manufacturers are Apple (A series) and Samsung (Exynos). Most brands use Qualcomm or MediaTek platforms.

- Last year Xiaomi released XRing O1, built on a 3‑nanometer process. This is already the first step toward full control over hardware.

Update plan
Lu emphasized: “This is our first chip. In the future we will release annual updates.”

Annual SoC development is complex, but the company is ready for it. The chip debuts in a device that will launch in China this year and later appear on international markets.

> Schedule change

> Last September, Xiaomi Vice President Xu Fei noted that guaranteeing an annual chip release was impossible. The new strategy signals a revision of development timelines.

AI assistant and global expansion
- Xiao AI is already active in Chinese smartphones based on proprietary models.

- Lu announced plans for a simultaneous launch of an international AI assistant alongside Xiaomi’s entry into the automotive market abroad.

Planned European market – 2027. “When our cars enter international markets, you will see our AI agents appear with them,” added Lu.

- Cooperation with Google is expected to use Gemini models both in China and overseas – a strategy similar to Samsung’s active integration of Gemini into its devices.

Investments in proprietary chips
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun previously announced an investment of at least 50 billion yuan ($6.9 billion) over the next decade for chip development. This confirms a long‑term strategy toward full autonomy in hardware production.

In short: Xiaomi is preparing annual updates of its own XRing processor, plans to integrate it with HyperOS and Xiao AI in one device, and aims to expand the AI assistant’s presence internationally alongside the launch of electric vehicles. This is a step toward greater vertical integration and reduced dependence on external SoC suppliers.
