Xreal rejected the release of the Neo adapter for Nintendo Switch: the resulting product is considered non-compliant with the standard requirements
Xreal is discontinuing the Neo dock for the Nintendo Switch
The company announced that it would stop manufacturing and selling the Neo dock—a device intended to connect the Switch console to Xreal’s augmented‑reality glasses. The accessory was officially unveiled but never made it to retail shelves. All preorders will be cancelled: customers will receive a refund of their $100 and a $30 credit toward another Xreal product (CNET).
Why this decision was made
During final testing, Xreal discovered that the Neo did not meet its stringent internal quality standards. CEO Chi Xu highlighted on Reddit that the company cannot release a product that does not fully satisfy its requirements:
> “During the final review we identified issues that do not meet our strict internal reliability standards… For safety reasons we made the difficult decision not to launch Neo.”
Representatives noted that this concerns only technical specifications, not device safety.
Technical problems
In preliminary tests with demanding games (e.g., *Metroid Prime 4*), there was a critical drop in frame rate that rendered the game unplayable. Despite this, the concept of a compact Switch adapter attracted user interest: Neo was smaller than most competitor docks.
Nintendo ecosystem context
The situation highlights Nintendo’s ecosystem limitations regarding external displays. Smartphones, PCs and handheld consoles (e.g., Steam Deck) can work with headsets directly, but the Switch and Switch 2 require docks to connect to external devices. When asked about potential built‑in support for Xreal in Nintendo, the company replied that it is not part of their plans yet.
