YouTube has started an experiment with AI remixes in Shorts, where new videos are generated from existing footage.
YouTube Shorts launches testing of AI video generation feature
Short vertical videos remain one of the most popular entertainment formats across various platforms. In response, YouTube Short sections have begun experimenting with a new capability: auto-generation of content based on existing files.
How the test works
At present, a small group of creators is participating in the experiments. They are provided with two tools:
1. Creating a new clip from a single frame
The user selects a specific fragment from their video, enters a text prompt, and AI creates a new short clip.
2. Adding new objects to someone else’s video content
The creator uploads another person’s video (with the owner’s permission) and can add new elements to the frame according to their description or the platform’s suggestion.
Generation is performed with simple text prompts entered by the user themselves or automatically suggested by the system.
How to use it
A new menu “Remix Short Clips” (Shorts Remix) will appear in the interface, available only for suitable videos. It has two modes:
- “Add Object” – allows inserting new objects into an eight‑second episode frame based on a text prompt.
- “Reimagine” – the user selects a specific frame of the original clip and formulates a request so that AI creates new video content from it.
Creator rights
All videos created with these AI tools will reference the source material. Original creators can prohibit the generation of remixes of their clips via AI if they wish to maintain control over their content.
