Meta reports no mass layoffs planned this year

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in an internal memo that the company does not expect further large-scale cuts in 2024. Reuters obtained the information after reviewing a copy of the memorandum.

Zuckerberg made the statement on the day a major restructuring concluded: 10 % of staff worldwide were laid off, and about 7,000 employees were reassigned to new roles related to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into workflows.

> “I want to clarify that we do not expect mass layoffs in the company this year. I also recognize that our communication was not as transparent as we would like it to be, and this is one area where I am striving for improvement,” he wrote.

Employees responded to the memo, citing the words “mass layoffs” and “expect.” One colleague noted: “Sometimes everything goes ‘unexpectedly’.”

Meta did not comment on the message.

Context of the reform

These changes are part of a large-scale reorganization at Meta that this year is boosting AI investments. The goal is to make AI agents the core of both external company products and internal tools.

The total volume of cuts and transfers announced this week affects roughly 20 % of Meta employees. Some transfers have already been completed; remaining staff will receive notifications by the end of the day.
