Chinese BYD plans to produce humanoid robots like Tesla.
BYD Goes Beyond Cars: Plans to Create Humanoid Robots
The Chinese automotive giant BYD, known for its vertical integration—from manufacturing traction batteries to a wide array of car components—has announced new ambitions. The company intends to enter the humanoid robot market, following in the footsteps of brands like Tesla.
Synergy Between Automobiles and Robotics
Elon Musk has repeatedly highlighted the similarity between approaches to training robots and refining autopilot systems. BYD plans to use a similar unification: “Our automotive AI technology is closely tied to robotics,” said executive vice president Li Ke. According to her, key competitive factors will be manufacturing, software, and hardware capabilities.
Path to a Household Robot
If humanoid robots become a mass-market product, BYD plans to sell them through its own dealer network. Experience in electric vehicle production will help build the robotic platform—from sensor channels and decision-making to motion control and software integration.
Open Ecosystem
The company wants its robotics platform to be open rather than closed. This will allow different robots to interact more effectively. While BYD has not yet clarified launch timelines or investment scales, competitors are already moving forward: Chery introduced a robot selling for $41,000.
Context
BYD remains the largest car manufacturer in China and a leader in the global hybrid and electric vehicle market. The new robotics plans underscore the company’s desire to expand its technological ecosystem and enter new markets.
