Darren Aronofsky will create an AI series dedicated to the American War of Independence
New series from Darren Aronofsky about the American Civil War
Hollywood director Darren Aronofsky launches his own project Primordial Soup and creates a mini‑series titled "On This Day… 1776," dedicated to the American Revolution. Each episode is a short film, but instead of a conventional production, the footage is generated using artificial intelligence.
Technology stack
* Google DeepMind handles scene generation with AI technologies from its laboratory.
* Additional support from Salesforce.
* The series will be hosted on Time magazine’s YouTube channel until the end of this year.
Plot and format
The events are based on facts, and professional actors provide the voice‑overs.
Each episode airs exactly on the 250th anniversary of the corresponding historical event:
| Episode | Theme | Release date |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | George Washington | Thursday (first release) |
| 2 | Benjamin Franklin | Next week, then weekly |
Creative team
* Darren Aronofsky – executive producer.
* Co‑writers: Ari Handel and Lucas Sussman.
The latter leads the team of writers, editors, artists, directors, and designers.
Project goal: “rethink the revolution as a fragile experiment rather than a predetermined outcome,” stresses the team.
Why AI?
Using artificial intelligence allows for recreating historical scenes without costly physical production. Google DeepMind has entered an agreement with Aronofsky to explore the possibilities of high‑level artistry supported by AI.
The series will test whether a model trained on a wide range of data can more accurately convey the spirit of the era and its characters than traditional reconstruction methods.
