Google announced the merger of Android and Chrome OS into a single platform called Aluminium OS by 2026.
Aluminium OS – a new Google platform, but its launch dates remain unchanged
At the MWC 2026 exhibition walls, Samir Samat (Google’s Android ecosystem president) confirmed that the release of Aluminium OS is scheduled for late 2026.
The president’s remarks came after questions about whether the company had postponed launching the new OS due to recent litigation over alleged antitrust violations by Google Search, which suggested a full release might wait until 2028. Samat did not specify partner details or devices but made it clear that this does not change the timeline.
Why laptops are back in vogue
According to Samat, the laptop is experiencing a “triumphant return.”
Initially smartphones and tablets seemed more appealing, but AI development has reshaped perceptions of form factor. Modern models with keyboards, larger screens, and desktop multitasking are becoming ideal for working with generative AI, automating processes, and tackling complex tasks.
> “AI is really bringing laptops back to the market… people thought this form factor was yesterday’s news,” Samat said.
> “Now AI tools are more powerful, so larger devices become more productive.”
This trend explains Google’s desire to expand Android’s role in the laptop segment through Aluminium OS.
Improved integration of phone and laptop
A key priority for Aluminium OS will be “battery life” across devices. Users increasingly demand the ability to smoothly transition from phone to laptop, as Apple offers with Handoff.
> “Google has been experimenting with such ideas in Chrome OS for years,” Samat noted.
> “But Aluminium OS will take them to a new level. An analogous feature will appear in Android 17.”
These capabilities are popular among Android users and are likely to become one of the OS’s distinguishing advantages.
Chrome OS is not disappearing
Samat dismissed rumors that Aluminium OS would completely replace Chrome OS.
He emphasized that work on the latter continues:
> “Chrome OS has performed very well. Its management capabilities are unparalleled. Development will continue in the same spirit.”
Chromebooks remain in demand, especially in education, thanks to their security model and centralized management.
In summary:
* Aluminium OS is slated for release at the end of 2026 (dates unchanged).
* Strong focus on laptops as new AI workstations.
* The main innovation is tighter integration between phone and laptop, similar to Handoff.
* Chrome OS remains a live product and will continue to evolve.
