Google announced the upcoming launch of the first beta version of Android 17
What’s new and how it will work
It looks like this
New version
Google announced the release of a pre‑build Android 17 Beta 1, opening another cycle of beta testing. At the same time the final patch for Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 was finished.
Foundation and improvements
Beta 1 is based on the Android 16 QPR platform with the latest bug fixes, increased stability, and performance improvements.
Automatic update
Participants in the beta program are not required to take any action – the update will appear automatically after release. This follows Google’s schedule: new enhancements every three months, followed by a major “core” OS update.
Exiting the beta program
To obtain the stable version of Android 16 QPR3, you need to exit the program before the Beta 1 notification appears. Those who stay in beta will immediately switch to Android 17 Beta 1. To exit without losing data it is enough to ignore the “downgrade” warning and wait for the QPR3 release. After installing Beta 1 further exit from the program is possible only after the Android 17 testing cycle ends (approximately June 2026).
Codename
Google traditionally uses dessert names as code names for versions. For Android 17 the official name has not yet been announced, but rumors say it will be *Cinnamon Bun* (“cinnamon roll”).
Thus, in the near future beta program users will automatically receive an update to Android 17 Beta 1, and those who want to stay on the stable 16 QPR3 must exit the program before its release. In June 2026 the Android 17 testing cycle will end and a return to stable builds may occur.
