Google Translate now knows how to find suitable idioms

In every language there are set expressions, such as “ni puka, ni pera” or “to beat around the bush.” They make sense to native speakers but can be confusing for those who use another language. To solve this problem, Google updated its translation service and taught it to choose appropriate idioms and colloquial turns of phrase.

What’s new in the translator
- Selecting the right tone

Now “Google Translate” can pick the communication tone for people speaking different languages. If needed, it offers a list of alternative phrasing options.

- Integration with Gemini

To generate hints about when and why a particular expression is used, an AI model called Gemini was incorporated into the service. After clicking the arrow to the right of the translation you can see an explanation of the idiom choice.

- “Understand” and “Ask” buttons

To better grasp the meaning of idioms, the user can press the “Understand” button. The app will generate a detailed overview of the expression’s meaning and highlight important nuances. The “Ask” button allows users to pose specific questions about translation details.

Where it’s available now
At present the update is available for users in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices. In the near future, it is planned to add it to the web version of the service. Google has not yet announced whether support will be expanded to more countries or when that will happen.

Thus, the new feature makes translation more natural and helps users better understand cultural nuances of language.
