Intel claims a significant breakthrough: the 14‑A processor will help the company once again outpace TSMC
Intel – Path to New Technological Heights
In a recent CNBC interview, Intel CEO Lip‑Bu Tan shared the company’s plans for developing new technology processes and emphasized how important contract business is both for the corporation itself and for the U.S. economy.
1. Improving Quality in 18A
- Current Progress: After Tan took over as CEO last spring, the yield of “good” chips at the 18A process was “not very good.” The figure now rises by about 7‑8 % each month, which, according to the executive, already brings satisfaction.
- Impact on Customers: This growth attracts new customers. Tan does not disclose specific names but notes that the second half of the year could bring many contract manufacturing agreements.
2. Development Strategy
- Contract Business as a Priority: For Intel it is a key segment that strengthens market position and supports the national economy.
- Manufacturing in the U.S.: Tan believes developing chip production domestically is a governmental priority, since now more than 90 % of advanced technologies are produced outside the United States.
3. Outlook for the New 14A Process
- Competition with TSMC: Lip‑Bu Tan is confident that the next 14A process will allow Intel to compete with industry leader TSMC “on equal footing.” He states that the technology will be available simultaneously with a comparable TSMC lineup, which would represent a significant breakthrough for the company.
Thus, Intel continues to invest in quality improvement and expanding contract manufacturing while aiming to become a full‑fledged competitor to the world’s leading chip producer.
