Mac‑Mini with “Made in USA” labels will appear by the end of the year, but their quantity is likely to be limited.
Apple plans to expand Mac Mini production in the United States
Apple has long been considering setting up its own personal computer manufacturing in the country. While local governments are usually the main partners, the company is already looking at assembling some Mac Mini models in Texas, reports *The Wall Street Journal*.
What’s happening now
- Foxconn – Apple’s key contractor – is preparing AI infrastructure server systems at its plant in northern Houston (Texas).
- According to a source, by the end of this year the same facility will begin assembling Mac Mini units aimed at the North American market.
Why it matters
1. Production localization
- In 2023 Apple pledged to invest about $600 billion in the U.S. economy over four years.
- Although Mac Mini accounts for less than 1 % of the company’s revenue (and even in the PC segment no more than 5 %), assembling them in the United States will give Apple a “formal” argument to promote localization.
2. Consumer demand
- Mac Mini products are often bought by developers creating apps and services for the Apple ecosystem.
- According to operations director Sabih Khan, U.S. production will help meet local demand while exports from Asia will continue.
3. Production history in Texas
- In 2013 the company began assembling Mac Pro in Texas, but volumes gradually declined.
- Today Apple believes that Mac Mini is more in demand in the American market and therefore justifies localization.
Planned changes
- Doubling the site – the Houston plant will be expanded to twice its current size for new assembly lines.
- Training center – alongside production a learning division will open, training staff and specialists from other companies who want to work in the U.S.
- The center is expected to start operating by year‑end.
Management comments
- Tim Cook (CEO) emphasized: “We are deeply interested in developing American manufacturing. We have already expanded AI server production in Houston and are happy to accelerate this process.”
- Sabih Khan noted that producing Mac Mini in the U.S. will complement existing Asian production and target the local market.
Thus, Apple intends not only to strengthen its position in the U.S. market but also to create an infrastructure for training and attracting talent that supports further growth of personal computer manufacturing in the United States.
