Microsoft announces the release of Windows 11 26H1, but switching to it is not possible
Microsoft is preparing a new version of Windows 11 for ARM devices
The company announced the release of the Windows 11 26H1 update, which will be available only as a preinstalled OS on laptops with Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series chips (ARM architecture). It cannot be installed on systems with AMD or Intel x86 processors – it is not just an update but a separate build.
Key features of 26H1
- Innovations in silicon and hardware solutions. Microsoft emphasizes that the new version will allow the use of the latest processor technologies, boosting performance and extending laptop battery life.
- Limited compatibility. Windows 11 26H1 is not intended for installation on existing devices. It will be preinstalled only on new models that will appear in Q1 2026.
How this will affect updates
- 26H1 is not a functional add‑on to the 24H2 and 25H2 releases, so improvements implemented in this release will not carry over to the main Windows 11 branch.
- The internal OS kernel differs from that used in 24H2/25H2 on regular PCs. This means computers with 26H1 will not receive annual feature updates in the second half of 2026; their updates will come only in the first half of each year.
- According to Microsoft, besides Snapdragon X2, support may also include Nvidia N1 ARM processors.
Thus, Windows 11 26H1 is a specialized build for new ARM laptops, offering improved performance and energy efficiency but limited to new devices with its own update schedule.
