Microsoft is developing a secure business variant of an AI agent that replaces OpenClaw
Microsoft launches its own “agent” for Microsoft 365 Copilot
As part of expanding its line of agent solutions, the company announced the start of testing a new tool similar to OpenClaw. The new product will target corporate customers and promises stricter security mechanisms compared with the open-source OpenClaw framework.
What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is a local agent that runs directly on a user’s computer and can create its own agents to perform tasks on its behalf. If Microsoft truly develops an offline‑mode equivalent, it will be another step toward expanding its portfolio of proprietary agent tools.
How does the new agent fit into Microsoft’s strategy?
Microsoft has been steadily introducing new solutions:
| Month | Product | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| February | Copilot Tasks | Early version that runs only in the cloud; helps with email and trip planning. |
| March | Copilot Cowork | Cloud agent using its own Work IQ technology and Anthropic’s Claude models; can perform actions inside Microsoft 365 apps. |
The new “agent” will run in the background and be capable of handling multi‑process tasks over extended periods.
What remains unknown
* Will the proprietary Claw‑like agent run locally, like the original OpenClaw, or remain cloud‑based?
* Which specific features from OpenClaw will be carried over to the new version?
Microsoft has not yet disclosed details. The agent demo is expected at Microsoft Build in June.
Thus, Microsoft continues to strengthen its portfolio of agent tools, offering both cloud solutions (Copilot Cowork) and potentially local variants that could compete with open‑source OpenClaw.
