Microsoft launched MAI-Image-2, an AI-based image generator that impressed with high-quality photorelevance and infographics
Microsoft launches a second generative image model – MAI‑Image‑2
In October of last year the company introduced the first version of the MAI‑Image‑1 generator, which ranked ninth in the Arena.ai leaderboard. This time Microsoft announced the release of its second iteration – MAI‑Image‑2. The new model can create images with more natural lighting, accurate skin tone rendering and realistic details. Thanks to these improvements it climbed to third place on the Arena.ai ranking.
What changed?
Parameter MAI‑Image‑1 MAI‑Image‑2 Lighting and detail Sufficiently good but sometimes “flat” More natural, deep shadows and light effects Text in images Hard to read Correct text rendering – convenient for infographics, slides and diagrams Cinematic quality Limited Improved generation of cinematic scenes and hyper‑detailed images Surrealism and fantasy Possible but not always realistic Support complex compositional ideas and fantastical worlds
Microsoft notes that MAI‑Image‑2 is especially effective at creating infographics, slides and diagrams thanks to improved text rendering. Additionally, the model handles the generation of cinematic and hyper‑detailed images better, including surreal concepts and intricate compositions.
Official statement
“Our new image generator MAI‑Image‑2 has launched! It’s already available on MAI Playground for everything from photorealism to detailed infographics. Our team put in incredible effort for this release,” wrote Mustafa Suleiman, head of Microsoft’s AI division, on X (formerly Twitter).
Where can it be used?
- Arena.ai: MAI‑Image‑2 ranks third, after Google Gemini‑3.1‑Flash‑image‑preview and OpenAI GPT‑Image‑1.5‑High‑Fidelity.
- Copilot and Bing Image Creator: will become available to users soon.
- MAI Playground: the model can already be tried right now.
- Microsoft Foundry API: developers can integrate MAI‑Image‑2 into their applications via API.
Thus, Microsoft has demonstrated significant progress in generative AI, making MAI‑Image‑2 more versatile and powerful for both professional infographics and creative projects.
