Sony PlayStation plans to implement an “equivalent frame generation library”

*Console architect Mark Cerny discussed in a Digital Foundry interview the upcoming innovations that will appear on Sony platforms.*

What is it?
- The equivalent frame generation library is a new feature similar to AMD’s FSR technology.
- It will be based on a joint project between Sony and AMD, already implemented in the PSSR 2 upscaling algorithms.

Current developments
Component | What it is | Where it’s used now
---|---|---
PSSR 2 | Image upscaling algorithm (widely used in PS5 Pro) | Games released in 2024
FSR Redstone / FSR 4 | AMD frame generation | Will appear on PlayStation soon
Amethyst | Long‑term Sony–AMD collaboration on machine learning | Foundation for PSSR 2 and future features

Cerny emphasized that PSSR 2 uses the same core algorithm as FSR Redstone. “The frame generation technology is also based on joint development,” he noted.

Where will the feature appear?
- In his interview, Cerny did not specify a particular model; he only mentioned the “PlayStation platform.”
- According to him, no additional releases are planned for 2024.
- Possible options:
- A new update for PS5 Pro,
- The feature appearing on Sony’s next console model,
- Simultaneously on both platforms.

Current status
- Implementation of PSSR 2 began at the end of February.
- On March 16, Sony announced support for the upscaler in games such as *Silent Hill*, *Monster Hunter Wilds*, *Final Fantasy VII Rebirth*, and *Crimson Desert*.
- The frame generation technology has not yet launched on PS5 Pro, despite its simple implementation and potential performance boost even on older GPUs.

> “I really like how this work is progressing, and the equivalent frame generation library should appear on PlayStation platforms at some point…,” Mark Cerny concluded.

We expect more detailed information from Sony in the future.
