Steam released a page for Rust 2, but it does not affect the developers at all
Rust is a popular multiplayer survival shooter that has been afloat for 12 years, but now rumors of a sequel are circulating in the air. Here’s what is known about it:
What happened How developers reacted An empty “Rust 2” page appeared on Steam
On Reddit users noticed that a page for a quasi‑free game called “Rust 2” has appeared and remains available in the digital storefront, even though there is no information about the project. Facepunch does not confirm it – operations director Alistair McFarlane wrote: “You haven’t seen anything.” This sounds like an indirect admission of a leak, but without concrete details. The question was asked on PC Gamer.
Founder and owner of the studio, Gary Newman, was asked about any connection to this page. No relationship – Newman replied: “No. We’re not making Rust 2.” He even added that he has no idea where the Steam page came from.
Confirmation from the Facepunch community.
Community manager under the pseudonym Errn stated: “The Rust 2 page on Steam is fake / not ours.”
A brief history
- Rust entered early access on December 11, 2013, and officially released on February 8, 2018.
- Last year, when the studio faced criticism of Unity’s policy regarding game installation fees, Newman even considered releasing Rust 2 on a different engine (not Unity). That was just a discussion, not an official plan.
What next?
Facepunch is currently focused on a new project, S&box – a physics sandbox for modding and creating your own games. There are no confirmations of Rust 2, and the Steam page remains “fake” according to an official studio representative.
> Bottom line: Any rumors about a Rust sequel have no factual basis at this time; developers clearly deny involvement in a project under that name.
