Google is preparing an update for its in-car voice assistant

The company announced that it has begun work on a new version of the built‑in voice assistant for cars. Instead of the familiar “Google Assistant,” it plans to introduce the more advanced AI helper Gemini, which should make interactions with drivers more natural and informative.

What Gemini promises

- Natural conversations – the voice assistant will conduct chats in everyday conversational style.
- More accurate vehicle information – users can quickly learn the car’s status, such as battery charge level or other technical parameters.
- Settings control – Gemini will allow various car options to be configured via voice commands.

Senior product manager Alankar Agnihotri emphasized that the company’s goal is to continually improve cars. Switching to Gemini should increase comfort and safety through more precise and friendly communication with the system.

Who is already preparing for deployment

General Motors previously announced a plan to update roughly four million vehicles from 2022 onward (Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC) using Gemini. Google has not limited itself to specific brands, indicating that the update will also be available to other ecosystem partners.

Where and when rollout will begin

According to The Verge, software deployment starts in the United States among English‑speaking users. In the coming months, the update will gradually appear in other regions and new languages. Car owners can switch to Gemini through a Google account linked to the on‑board system.

Future possibilities

Google plans to add secure access to personal information from Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home apps, allowing deeper integration of user data into automotive services.
