WhatsApp now displays user names, and that has already been the case in Telegram since 2014
WhatsApp Adds Usernames
The instant messaging service WhatsApp has begun gradually rolling out support for “usernames.” Now, to message someone who isn’t in your contact list, you don’t need their phone number—just their username.
How it works
1. Step‑by‑step rollout
The new feature is initially available to a limited number of users and is already present in the beta versions of the app for both Android and iOS.
2. Enabling it on your account
For a username to work, you must link it to your own account. This can be done in the “Profile” section of the messenger’s settings. Sometimes the app itself notifies you that this option is available (for example, on iOS).
3. Restrictions and requirements
- A username may be linked to Facebook✴ and Instagram✴ accounts. If the chosen handle is already taken on one of these platforms, you’ll need to prove ownership of the corresponding account.
- You can set a four‑digit access code. When someone tries to message you by username, they will be required to enter this code.
Thus, WhatsApp makes communication more flexible and convenient by eliminating the need to exchange phone numbers at first contact.
