YouTube launches a voice assistant on TVs

YouTube expands the functionality of its voice assistant: it now works not only in mobile apps and the web version, but also directly on smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming devices. Users can ask AI questions without interrupting video playback.

How to summon the assistant
1. On screen tap the “Ask” button.

2. The system will offer ready-made prompts related to the current clip.

3. If desired, you can enable the remote’s microphone and ask your question directly.

Sample requests:

- In a cooking show: “What ingredients are needed?”

- While listening to music: “Who is performing this track?”

Answers appear instantly, and the video continues playing without pause.

Availability and language support
At the time of publication, the feature is available to a limited number of users aged 18 and over. The assistant understands English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean.

YouTube’s development context
YouTube first launched its voice AI tool in 2024. Expanding to larger screens is a logical step in an era where media shifts to more flexible devices. According to Nielsen’s April 2025 report, YouTube watch time accounts for 12.4 % of total TV viewing time, already allowing the platform to surpass giants like Disney and Netflix.

Competitors
- Amazon – Alexa+ on Fire TV lets users search scenes and receive personalized recommendations.

- Roku – an updated voice assistant can handle complex movie plot queries.

- Netflix – is testing its own AI potential for content discovery.

Thus, YouTube strengthens its presence on television platforms by offering users a more interactive and convenient way to engage with video content.
